Gawsworth Hall

Gawsworth Hall is a timber-framed house dating to the 14th century. The beautiful black and white house was once home to Mary Fitton, thought to be Shakespeare's 'Dark Lady', and playwright Samuel 'Maggoty' Johnson.

The house didn't always bring good luck to its residents. In 1712, a dispute over the house resulted in the deaths of both participants.

Today, the house is lived in and owned by the Richards family. You can visit the Grade I-listed hall from May until September Tickets cost £8.50. Regular events are also held in the hall. For more information, visit: gawsworthhall.com.

St James' Church, Gawsworth

St James’ is a pretty parish church nestling among trees by a tranquil pond. The church was built in the 15th and 16th centuries out of yellow and red sandstone. St James’ is Grade I-listed and is right next to another equally treasured landmark, Gawsworth Hall, making it a worthy stop on any hike.
