Betws-y-Coed Railway Station

Highlight • Settlement

The charming tourist hotspot of Betws-y-Coed is served by this small station on the Conwy Valley Line. The village is popular with walkers and lies within the boundary of the Eryri National Park. The railway passes through some of the most picturesque scenery Wales has to offer. Nearby Swallow Falls is a beautiful place to visit, as is the Neolithic cemetery at Capel Garmon.
The original stone station, opened in 1868, still stands and was built by local craftsmen. Mainly used by freight transport equipment, as the number of tourists increased, passenger services became more frequent.

Betws-y-Coed Village

Highlight • Rest Area

A true outdoor lovers' mecca, Betws-y-Coed is a great gateway to Snowdonia National Park. Anyone who has driven into Snowdonia on the A5 will have noted its picturesque setting, its alpine character and its numerous gear shops, cafes, hotels and B&Bs.

Betws-y-Coed is surrounded by the gorgeous Gwydyr Forest, which boasts a variety of trails. Moel Siabod is prominent from many points in the village and it is only a short drive to starting points for Snowdon and the Glyderau.

This memorial on the north side of the lake commemorates the fact that Lord Ancaster allowed the construction of the dam and the use of the lake as a water supply.

Highlight • Lake

This idyllic mountain lake is hidden amongst the pine and deciduous forests of the Gwydyr Forest and lies above Betws-y-Coed. The lake is used as a water reservoir. In the past the lake was actually made up of two smaller lakes, called Llyn Rhisgog and Llyn Enoc.

St. Mary's Church, Betws-y-Coed

Highlight • Religious Site

This church was built between 1870 and 1873 to accommodate the increasing numbers of summer visitors to the area. It was designed by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. The main benefactor was the Liverpool businessman Charles Kurtz. The church was dedicated in July 1873 and could seat 150 people. It replaced a medieval church dedicated to St Michael and cost £5,000 (equivalent to £560,000 in 2023). The tower was completed in 1907.
