Shortly after the Second World War, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) designated the current area as the collection center for the more than a thousand tombs in Germany. The architectural design was designed by Philip Dalton Hepworth and soon began the reburial. A significant part of this work was done by German prisoners of war who were under Canadian supervision.
