Saint Folquin Church

Highlight • Other

The 16th century hall church has three brick gables with diamond pattern, which correspond to the naves. On the central pinnacle is a statue of Saint Volkwin, bishop of Thérouanne. Beautifully restored after a fire in 1976, the church has striking brick interior and a bell tower accessed by a narrow spiral staircase (75 steps) carved into a 12th century pillar.

Château d'Esquelbecq

Highlight • Castle

The Castle with its feudal charm, restored in 0606, with its dovecote (1606), gatehouse, farm (housing the Maison du Westhoek) and bailiff's house (1615), still looks exactly like the print by Sanderus (Flandria Illustrata, 1641). Only the watchtower collapsed in 1984. The stepped gables and towers are reflected in the water of the moats, fed by the Ijzer. Walk along the moat to the gatehouse and the stables.

Canal de Bergues Promenade and Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Canal de Bergues (French: Canal de Bergues) is a nearly 8 km long canal that connects the Kolme River at Sint-Winoksbergen with the port of Dunkirk.
The canal was dug in 1499 by deepening the Gersta River. This was one of the many creeks that plowed through the coastal area of French Flanders and were incorporated into the drainage system after its reclamation. The Gersta was located between Sint-Winoksbergen and Dunkirk. The canal was dug in an attempt to provide the ailing port of Sint-Winoksbergen with a shorter outlet to the sea. It was subsequently deepened in 1574, 1621, and 1761, making it one of the oldest canals in France.
