Fiona's Seat

Highlight • Viewpoint

Sometimes we all crave for the next little bench to sit down, take a rest or have a picnic. Well, here it is - Fiona's seat. Perfectly located right after or before some steep up and down depending on where you come from...

Small bamboo maze that is well worth walking through if you are in the little common (which is quite pretty btw...)

Hesworth Common

Highlight • Natural

Approximately 100 acres (40 ha) of bracken and heather heathland with areas of woodland, Hesworth Common offers some beautiful views across the South Downs. The striking yellow bog asphodel thrives here. It is distinctive due to its clutch of spiky, star-like flowers.

Fittleworth Village

Highlight • Trail

Surrounded by various trails that explore a vibrant patchwork of heathland, woodland and commons, Fittleworth is a delightful little village in the South Downs National Park.

Directly west of the village is Hesworth Common, boasting lovely views of the South Downs. Meanwhile, to the south of the River Rother is Lord's Piece and Sutton Common, a marvellous region for a ramble.

St Mary's Church

Highlight • Historical Site

This church dates back to at least 1200 and is a grade I listed building. As many windows are clear, the building is wonderfully light. Three of the stained glass windows are C.E. Kempe's work and show the distinctive wheat-sheaf mark.

Bedham Church Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

From Wakestone Lane don't miss these striking ruins situated in the valley below, just off a leafy bridleway.

Standing proud are the remains of an abandoned church and school known as St Michaels and All Angels Anglian Church. It was built in 1800 but shut its doors for the last time in 1959 after a dwindling congregation.

Bedham Old Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Set beautifully on a wooded, sandstone ridge in the western Weald, Bedham is a picturesque, yet tiny hamlet. The hamlet is made up of a few scattered houses, a farmhouse and a pretty, disused school house that doubled up as a church on Sundays.

The tranquillity on offer here made the hamlet a popular escape with artists during the 20th century. Chief amongst them was Edward Elgar, who wrote his four last great works at the timber-framed Brinkwells cottage.
