Canal du Rhône au Rhin Lock and Lockkeeper's House

Highlight • Structure

The Canal du Rhône au Rhin connects more exactly the Saône, a tributary of the Rhône, to the Rhine.

In Alsace, its banks have been paved from Marckolsheim to Strasbourg to allow easy cycling between the European capital and Colmar.

Canal du Rhône au Rhin

History of the Rhône-Rhine Canal (French version):

of the Rhône-Rhein-Kanal von „Notre Dame de Neunkirch“ (Deutsche version):

The Rhône-Rhine canal is a French canal which connects the Saône, a navigable tributary of the Rhône, to the Rhine. It is designed as a necessary link to connect the maritime ports of northern Europe with those of the Mediterranean by creating a river link Rotterdam-Marseille via Germany.
You are on the northern branch of the canal, built around 1830. This portion of the canal doubled the Rhine and linked the ports of Mulhouse to those of Strasbourg (the northern end of the canal does not flow directly into the Rhine, but into the Ill which surrounds part of Strasbourg and which no longer communicates directly with the Rhine). Here, the canal was decommissioned in the 1960s following the construction of the Grand Canal d'Alsace and the Kembs-Niffer lock.
The banks of the canal were paved from Marckolsheim to Strasbourg to make it easy to connect the European capital and Colmar by bike.
