Holy Cross Chapel, St. John's Monastery, Müstair
Holy Cross Chapel, Müstair
The Holy Cross Chapel in the Graubünden town of Müstair is one of the most outstanding sacred buildings of Carolingian architecture in Europe. The two-storey church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 along with the other monastery buildings of the Benedictine monastery of St. John.
The monastery of Müstair was founded between 774 and 778 - probably on the orders of Charlemagne, but at least with his consent - by the Bishop of Chur, and the Holy Cross Chapel also dates from this period, according to reliable dendrochronological findings. Accordingly, the eastern part of the ceiling, which divides the upper floor from the lower floor, is the oldest (preserved) beamed ceiling in Europe. In the course of a comprehensive restoration project that has been ongoing since 2011, Carolingian frescoes and fresco remains were discovered inside the upper church, which also support a dating of the current chapel to the last quarter of the 8th century.
Recent excavation findings show that a predecessor building of roughly the same size and width, but without side apses, stood on the site of the current chapel - this could have been a single-storey chapel building that served as a place of worship for the monks and construction workers involved in the construction of the monastery and the monastery church. This chapel would then have been expanded in the 8th century to form the current two-storey, three-apsidial building.

MÜSTAIR - THE MONASTERY
The legend of the Frankish king
1200 years of history: this is symbolized by the walls of the St. Johann monastery in Müstair. Myths and legends surround the establishment in the 8th century.
The Frankish king, Charlemagne, is said to have founded the monastery, to which the stucco statue in the church bears witness. Simply that way? Not quite. According to legend, Charlemagne got caught between Bormio and Sta. Maria on the Umbrail Pass in a relentless blizzard. In the face of death, he vowed to found a monastery in case he escaped the storm alive.
1200 years of building history
Founded as a monastery in 775, it has been a women's convent since the 12th century and has been inhabited throughout its 1200-year history. The monastery gave the Val Müstair its name, because Müstair is derived from the Latin “monasterium”.
In its long history, the monastery was never completely destroyed and only partially rebuilt. Today, the monastery complex is characterized by an interplay of the most diverse architectural styles from the most varied of eras and styles. Architectural highlights include the church and the Holy Cross Chapel from the Wilhelminian era, the 8th century, the Planta tower from the 10th century and the bishop's residence from the 11th century.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
When the St. Johann Monastery was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1983, the current prioress was surprised that such a dilapidated monastery was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the nuns still had to set up bins and buckets when it rained.
The wall paintings in the monastery church were decisive for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the largest and best-preserved fresco cycle from the early Middle Ages.
