"Luegeten View" of Lake Zurich

Highlight • Viewpoint

Below the Luegeten you have an incredibly beautiful view over Lake Zurich, the Seedamm and the two islands of Ufnau and Lützelau. Unfortunately, the restaurant has been closed for about 3 years, apparently due to internal disputes...

Very nice viewing point that is relatively easy to reach on foot or by MTB. The restaurant is large, with a sunny terrace, self-service.

St. Meinrad Chapel (Etzel Chapel)

Highlight • Religious Site

The first chapel on the top of the pass was built in the 13th century. It was demolished and rebuilt in the 17th century. After the renovation in 2011, the chapel was re-blessed. The monk Meinrad is said to have lived as a hermit at the top of the pass in the ninth century. Meinrad later moved deeper into the Dark Forest, to what is now Einsiedeln.

Gasthaus St. Meinrad, Egg SZ
The originally wooden pilgrim house dates back to the 14th century. After a fire in 1759, today's inn was built according to plans by brother Kaspar Braun, who also built the stables in Einsiedeln. In 1983 the building underwent a thorough restoration.

Anti-tank bunker Etzel Pass East

Highlight • Historical Site

Sperrstelle Etzel
The Sperrstelle Etzel was a border fortification of the Swiss Army. It is located at the Reduit entrance in the Etzel area in the canton of Schwyz. The Reduit line was built from 1941 onwards, belonged to the operational area of the 7th Division and from 1947 to the Reduit Brigade 24.
The approximately 600 combat structures, built between 1939 and 1945 in the canton of Schwyz, were integrated into barriers and strongpoints and equipped with different types of weapons depending on the mission. The 6th and 7th Divisions planned different types of bunkers for the same function, which were mostly carried out by builders from the area.
These facilities were intended to prevent a thrust through the pre-alpine part of the canton of Schwyz into the Schwyz basin and from there further towards Gotthard as part of the national Réduit in the deployment plan of the 6th and 7th Divisions.
In January 1941, the 7th Division received the following order from the 4th Army Corps: Block the access to the Wäggithal and cover the upper Sihl Valley and the Einsiedeln area with a main focus on the Etzel strongpoint. Blocking line on the Linth Canal and security on the upper Lake Zurich. Existing strongpoints are to be utilized. Further strongpoints are to be established as a fallback for mobile defense on the heights between the upper Lake Zurich and the upper Sihl Valley.
The "Kampfgruppe Etzel" (Infantry Regiment 33) received the following order from Division Commander Hans Frick: Deny the enemy access to the Sihlsee area in the Etzel-Übergang–Bühl section; for this purpose, hold the line on the northern slope of the Etzel-Übergang and the Hoher Etzel – the Bühl stream cut through a closed and deeply echeloned defensive front. The Etzel-Übergang itself and the summit of the Hoher Etzel are to be held as closed strongpoints by reserves. The Sperrstellen Feuerschwand and Raten formed the section of the Reduit border between the Sperrstelle Unterägeri and the Sperrstelle Schindellegi. The Sperrstelle Etzel formed the section of the Reduit border between the Sperrstelle Schindellegi and the "Kampfgruppe Oberegg" as well as the Sperrstelle Wägital ("Kampfgruppe Pfiffegg").
The fortifications consist of road barricades, terrain anti-tank obstacles in the form of tank ditches and tank walls, anti-tank bunkers, machine gun bunkers, shelters, artillery command post caverns, artillery bunkers, and permanent artillery emplacements for housing 7.5 cm and 15 cm caliber field guns. They were further operated in the post-war years and equipped with newer types of weapons.
