Valley of the Butterflies

Highlight • Natural Monument

Attracted by the resinous smell of the oriental sweetgum tree, thousands of butterflies flock here between June and September. The Russian bear, as the butterflies are called, mates in the valley and lays its eggs here. This valley is therefore very important for the preservation of its species.

From this location you have a magnificent panoramic view. Be careful when going down, the slope is steep, filled with stones and therefore dangerous.

The Butterfly Valley, which is criss-crossed by bubbling streams and small waterfalls, is the habitat of the rather rare Panaxia quadripunctaria, a species of butterfly that is also called the “Russian bear” or “Spanish flag”.

The resin-rich deciduous trees in this area attract these butterflies and encourage them to reproduce, creating an ever larger population on Rhodes.

The name "Butterfly Valley" comes from the fact that every year a …
