The ancient, mighty oaks with a trunk circumference of up to six meters are characteristic of the "Neuchâtel primeval forest". Mighty hornbeams and copper beeches are also often found here, which fill the areas between the old tree veterans and in some cases even tower above them. Many old oaks are now hollow, rotted and partially fallen over. Dead wood is not removed in this protected area and thus offers a habitat for many creatures.

It is also remarkable that holly grow here in the forest, which grow like trees up to ten meters high and form veritable thickets. The old stock of trees offers many cave breeders good breeding grounds.

Hunting lodge in the Neuenburg Primeval Forest

In the middle of the Neuchâtel jungle, a hunting lodge built in 1950 can be found, which today serves as a resting place and refuge for forest visitors.

Opposite the hunting lodge stood an imposing 850-year-old oak tree, until it fell over between 19 and 20 June 2014. It was considered the oldest tree in the forest. Now you can follow the decay of the oak, which can last up to 50 years.

Yes, yes.....we are still on the North Sea, but 17 km away from the Dangast coast an incredible, wild and rustic forest.🌳🌲🌿

Today we took advantage of the wonderful autumn weather again and made a small but nice hike through the "Neuchâtel Primeval Forest". The gnarled trees and deadwood are really worth seeing, with a little imagination you can spot some forest trolls here.
Nice paths with a lot of seating, but I was surprised how many people were walking here...
