The Erlensee has an island. And the birds breed on the island. At the beginning of the Erlensee there is a kiosk where you can linger and have something to eat and drink.

Pfungstadt Moor

Highlight • Natural

The Pfungstädter Moor is a 97-hectare nature reserve. It was declared part of the "Hessian Altneckarschlingen" bird sanctuary in 2007. Access is open to visitors on the designated paths. The moor was formed around 10,000 years ago when an arm of the Altneckar found a new bed and the old river silted up. In the 19th and early 20th century, peat was mined and used as fuel in many residential and factory buildings.
Due to various influences, the groundwater level dropped constantly, so that the renaturation of the moor was endangered. From 1999 onwards, treated water from the Rhine was added with the aim of re-establishing moor-typical animal and plant species at least in parts of the protected area by means of near-surface moisture penetration and an increase in groundwater levels.
Further considerations as to how the situation in this nature reserve could be improved in the long term led to a plan by the Darmstadt working group of the Hessian Society for Ornithology and Nature Conservation (HGON) for the partial restoration of a system of peat extraction ditches from the early 1900s. After approval by the higher nature conservation authority at the Darmstadt regional council, a more than 3 km long water-covered ditch system was restored in five construction phases from 2006 to 2016. Nature conservation associations, the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg and the regional council of Darmstadt were involved in the financing.

Varied NSG with refreshments, inside and outside. In summer it is rather crowded around the large moor lake, as this is also a bathing lake with a beautiful beach. Outside the bathing season you can vary the length of the hike very well, it is flat and easy to walk on.

April 19, 2025,Erlensee – Großer Moorsee Runde von Bickenbach
In gorgeous spring weather ☀️, we took a trip to the nearby town of Bickenbach. We did a great loop around Lake Erlensee and the Pfungstadt Moor. What a wonderful nature reserve near us. There's a lot of fishing going on at Lake Erlensee, but there's also a small area where swimming is permitted.

The Erlensee, we've never been there. I only know the name from a parking lot on the A67.

Today was the day and it's worth it!👌
Beautiful circular route, mostly with a view of the Erlensee and the moor lakes.

The kiosk is open daily and offers something for every taste.
You eat inside or outside, just as you like.

Today with pleasant temperatures ☁️⛅️ to the 🥾🥾 in the Pfungstädter Moor🌳🌳🌾🌱🦆 very beautiful....some really enchanted jungle paths 👍

Short, flat, mostly shady, and still early enough in spring to avoid the bathers and nudes at Erlensee... (one bank plus the "beach" on the kiosk side are for swimming, bathing, and sunbathing, while the other bank is reserved for anglers)...

I actually wanted to go on the tour with @Tanja & Hamlet🐶 mit Luna im ❤️en. I couldn't get the tour out of my head, she had planned 8 km, and so we set off without her😅. I shortened it to Mischka needs.
Hmm, what can I say. The landscape is very beautiful and the path portion is really great. …

At 3 p.m. we are invited for coffee in Langen, at 9 p.m. our daughters' plane lands in Frankfurt - and until then there is enough time to visit new destinations along the way.
Our first tour takes us to the Erlensee near Pfungstadt - many thanks to Rita 🫶. The mostly shady path is pleasant to walk and you …

September 29, 2024,Pfungstädter Moor Tour
Due to swine fever, large areas of the paths in the Pfungstadt Moor are closed off and it is recommended to start the tour from the large car park at Bickenbacher Erlensee. The kiosk there is open all year round and has toilets.
The hike itself is beautiful, especially through the two lakes, which, however, also make the ground muddy …
