Rodau nature trail - Station 21: Gäulsgraben

Highlight • Trail

This is where the so-called Gäulsgraben ran until the Mühlenroda was filled in before World War II. The western part of the ditch lies somewhat lower than the Mühlenroda (Plate 15). It can therefore be assumed that the Rodau flowed here before human settlement and was only diverted to the Oberwiese in the Middle Ages to operate the mills. As a result, the lower original stream bed became a swampy area, which probably did not carry water all year round. The exact origin of the name "Gäulsgraben" is not known. The name certainly comes from Gaul (plural of Gaul, horse), which was a derogatory term for this animal species. The ditch was probably used as a watering place for animals in the Middle Ages. The drawing on the right shows that Ober-Roden used to be traversed by several ditches in a west-east direction, which all reunited to form the Rodau at the level of today's sewage treatment plant. From around the bridge to the school, the Gäulsgraben was until the 18th century identical to the part of the Rodau that supplied the Hanauer Mühle (Table 26) with water and leads to flooding of the adjacent properties. Especially after such heavy rainfall, you can see from the red color of the water that the name Rodau was derived from red water. This clearly visible coloring sometimes occurs due to the source in the Messeler Hügelland with its red lying ferrous rock.

A creek is also home to a large number of small animals, some of which are indicators of water quality. These include crustaceans, insects and their larvae, leeches and spiders. All species shown here were found in the Rodau between Urberach and Ober-Roden.

The willow church standing at this point is an ecumenical project of all five Christian parishes in Rödermark. The willow church as a meeting place for all denominations and as a bridge between the districts is regularly used between Pentecost and Thanksgiving for various services and devotions. The project, which was inaugurated in 2007 during the Rödermark Festival to mark the town's 30th birthday, was initiated by Gudrun and Frithjof Decker. Since the 1980s, Christians have increasingly embraced the cause of praise and care for creation and have held outdoor worship services. The branches of the willows enclose a place of worship, a space to pause and worship in nature.

A location on the Rodau was important right from the start. Water as a sign of life is of central importance for the churches.

Weidenkirche Rödermark

Highlight • Religious Site

The Weidenkirche an der Rodau is an “open air church”, i.e. in the open air. Willows form the outer “border”. In summer it is wonderfully green.

Almost every permanent river is also a habitat for fish. At least 26 species of fish have already been identified in the Rodau from the source to the confluence with the Main. Only four species also occur regularly in the upper reaches of the Rodau, but the Döbel only below the sewage treatment plant. At least in 2010, the bitterling was still found in the upper reaches, but it now seems to have died out in the Rodau. The same applies to the minnow, for which there is unconfirmed individual evidence around 2010. The brook lamprey occupies a special position (see plate 25). The diet of the fish shown usually consists of animal plankton (crustaceans, insect larvae, worms), fish spawn and insects, sometimes also algae and plant remains.

Skatepark Urberach

Highlight • Structure

Next to the “Badhaus” in the Urberach district there is a beautiful “skate park”. Here you can experience some great and acrobatic “performances”, great.

Especially in summer, it is very pleasant to relax here for a moment with a cool drink after visiting the swimming pool.
