Hattgenstein Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The tower near Hattgenstein offers probably the best view in the area. It is located on the Rothenburgberg, which at around 600 meters already offers a great view. With a small detour to the 20-meter-high viewing platform, you can expand the all-round view of the charming landscape. Incidentally, the tower was built from 100-year-old Douglas firs from the Birkenfelder Schönenwald. In the restaurant opposite you can strengthen yourself after climbing the tower.

Sauerbrunnen Well

Highlight • Natural Monument

The water in this fountain was considered by Romans as one of the region's most important mineral resources. In the Sauerbrunnen, which is fed by the nearby Petersquelle, bubbling particularly ferrous and carbonated water. That's where the name comes from. Due to the high content of minerals, the water tastes slightly sour. A short break and a big sip of healing water is definitely recommended. A little further is the Petersquelle, there you will find a small water playground, which also gives the little a lot of fun.

Roman Burial Mound of Siesbach

Highlight • Historical Site

Right on the bike path lies this impressive grave. The Roman burial mound dates from the second century, but was not reopened until 1976. The tomb is one of many places in the region that go back a long way in history. A short stop is definitely worth it.

Schwollen Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Schwollen is the spring village in the Birkenfeld district. Large and well-known companies fill their swollen bubbles here. The village is usually very quiet. Little traffic, so driving on the main road is usually not life-threatening.
Hajo Böß has now opened his country inn again, a stop is always recommended.

Hattgenstein Village Center

Highlight • Settlement

Until the end of the 18th century, the village belonged to the Upper County of Sponheim and was under the administration of the Oberamt Birkenfeld as part of the Hambach care. In 1607 Hattgenstein had 21 families and in 1699 seven families, in 1790 the town had 177 inhabitants.

Based on the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the region came under the Oldenburg Principality of Birkenfeld in 1817. The municipality was assigned to the mayor's office of Leisel in Birkenfeld. From 1918 Hattgenstein belonged to the Oldenburg district of Birkenfeld and in 1937 came to the Prussian district of Birkenfeld. Hattgenstein has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946.
