Stadtkirche Langen

Highlight • Religious Site

The neo-Gothic hall church made of red sandstone with the 54 m high tower dominates the cityscape on a hill in the old town area of Langen. The city church was built in the years 1879-1883. It replaced a church that had been built in 1365 on the site of a previously mentioned in 834 and dedicated to the Apostle James predecessor. This church, next to a dating back to Romanesque origins and stood until the 19th century existing defensive tower, had to be closed in 1875 because of dilapidated and demolished.
The current building is based, among other things, on the Elisabeth church in Marburg, in the proportions of the church tower. The 39 m long and 14 m high nave has the shape of a Latin cross. In 1962 the organ builder Oberlinger installed a new organ in the old case.
The interior was redesigned in 1959, whereby a gallery was installed and the windows were replaced. In a later renovation in 1996/97, the original appearance was largely restored. In a side chapel there is a crucifix from around 1700. In 2016, four glass windows were installed in the transept of the church. With the inauguration of the town church in 1883, Langen was elevated to a city by Grand Duke Ludwig IV.
The town church of Langen is a cultural monument because of its architectural and historical significance.
