Steinhauer Museum Mühlbach (Former Town Hall)

Highlight • Historical Site

The town hall in Mühlbach was built in 1903. Its massive construction in local sandstone and its size are testaments to the prosperity that once prevailed in Mühlbach due to sandstone mining.

Raußmühle on the Elsenz

Highlight • Historical Site

(Source: raussmuehle.de)
The Raußmühle was first mentioned in a document in 1334. It was the mill of Heinrich Ruthard, whose name was shortened to "Rus" in later years. Since that time the list of millers on the Raußmühle can be traced almost completely and from around 1500 the name Raußmüller appears again and again in the lists. The Raußmüller were also mayors, church leaders, forester, post office keepers and innkeepers. In contrast to the municipal mills, the Raußmühle was always privately owned.

This has remained the case to this day. Frank Dähling, the current owner, calls it a "fortunate fact that the Raußmüller always had enough money to keep the mill, but never enough to completely redesign it". This has been true at least for the years since 1765, when Christoph Weigand, merchant and merchant at the Raußmühle, rebuilt the mill and gave it its current baroque appearance. The foundation walls, however, come from an earlier substance and finds on the site behind today's mill show that a previous building must have stood there.

Today the Raußmühle presents itself as a 3-sided system, which is protected on its open side by the Elsenzaue. It is hard to imagine today that this ensemble was used as a junkyard and guest workers' dormitory in the 1970s. Rather, one usually gets the impression that time has simply stood still here - or at least it runs a tad slower here.

You can find more about the history of the Raußmühle in the article "The Mill of Heinrich Ruthard" by Frank Dähling, which you can download here
