Historic Town Hall Kandel

Highlight • Historical Site

Baroque building, erected between 1773 and 1783 according to plans by the Pfalz-Zweibrücken bridge and road construction inspector Christiany, who also planned the Catholic parish church of St. Michael in Kandel's French twin town Reichshoffen in 1771.
For a long time, the representative building was not only used as a town hall. Rather, the magistrate's court was once housed on the upper floor and the court officials lived in the attic of the attic. The ground floor, on the other hand, housed the municipal administration from the start. The village policeman's guardroom was also located here. The “fruit and grocer's markets” were held for a long time in the large foyer and the calibration of the scales was checked. But the post office, the savings bank and the tax and community collection department also found temporary accommodation here.
Today the listed building still houses the large council chamber, which is also used for exhibitions and other representative events, the city library and the office of the Kandel adult education center.
In 2000/2001 the building was completely renovated.

St. George's Church, Kandel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Protestant Church of St. George is the landmark of Kandel and the largest late Gothic church in the Palatinate.

The old Church of St. George was built around the 12th century as a Romanesque parish and defense church for the village. At that time, it was located in the fortified cemetery of Kandel. In the Mainz-Palatinate War between 1459 and 1461, this old church was destroyed by an attack by soldiers from the Electoral Palatinate and the Swiss Confederacy. After the war, the Church of St. George was rebuilt in the late Gothic style. Around 1468, the choir, the oldest preserved structure in the town, was begun. In 1475, the nave was completed. Between 1501 and 1519, the mighty 60 m high west tower was erected. The tower is the work of Master Jörg, who also created the cloister of the Augustinian monastery in Heidelberg. Friedrich Hammer from Hagenau is also said to have participated in the construction, as evidenced by a (presumed) self-portrait bearing his stonemason's mark.

Renovation 1836/40 and abolition of the simultaneum 1957
The late Gothic defense church of St. George in Kandel was converted from a basilica into a three-nave gallery hall by August von Voit between 1836 and 1840. Only the tower and the choir remained unchanged. With the introduction of the Reformation in the 16th century, the church became a simultaneum. Protestants and Catholics shared the place of worship until the construction of the Catholic Church of St. Pius in 1957, after which the church finally became Protestant. The church has 750 seats, is 55 m long, 20 m wide, and 30 m high without the tower. Its tower is 60 m high and visible from afar due to its location.
