Roggendorf Village Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Roggendorf was first mentioned in documents in 1194 as Rotgentorp. The local village church is already mentioned in the Ratzeburg tithe register of the year 1230. The village and later Good Roggendorf belonged from the beginning of the 15th century to the family von Lützow, who sold the estate in 1641 to the family von Uffel in Dutzow. This sold Roggendorf 1694 to the family von Fabrice by marriage. The family of Fabrice kept Roggendorf until 1887 and then sold to the Haase family, who also rebuilt the Roggendorf manor. With the estate rule over Roggendorf was demonstrably from 1653 the church patronage connected to the village church.

The Feldstein Church, built in the early 15th century and built around 1407, has a box choir, typical of West Mecklenburg, which was built during this period. The gable of the longhouse and the window surrounds consist of bricks, also the three-window group with the pointed-arched panel in the choir gable. Gothic wall pillars support the construction. The nave is laid flat, the chancel covered with a ribbed vault covered. The opening of the choir to the nave is decorated with a pointed arch. On the south side, a small extension was later built from bricks on the choir. From the same building material is also the gable of the nave.

At the end of the 17th century, the raised church tower was set in front of the nave as a boarded-up wooden tower, and the pyramidal helmet was covered with wooden shingles. On the west side is a tower clock.

Church of Groß Salitz

Highlight • Religious Site

The manor house in Groß Salitz has probably seen better days, now there are obviously apartments in it. However, the place has a small and very interesting church. It's also worth taking a look inside.

Interesting in Neuendorf is the restaurant "Zu den 3 Linden" and the landscape around Neuendorf. There are many wind turbines here, but also beautiful hills and forests. The Neuendorfer Moor, which was once accessible in GDR times, can no longer be visited.

In the valley ahead of us, a battle between the Danes with approx. 25,000 soldiers and the Swedes with approx. 15,000 men took place during the Northern War on December 20, 1720. The Danes under General Stenbock finally won against the Danes under Friderick IV. Several thousand people died. General Stenbock moved on to the west after the battle, senselessly destroyed large parts of Altona and was later defeated.
Today Danes and Swedes often come here to commemorate this battle, but probably never at the same time.

The city church is classified since 2005 as a monument of national importance.

It was built around 1200. The three-storey foundation building is one of the earliest brick churches in northwestern Mecklenburg. Model were Westphalian hall churches whose kind is determined by equally high ships. The three-storey foundation building was built around 1200/1220 from east to west in two stages of construction. The original box choir was replaced at the beginning of the 15th century by a three-nave choir, which in contrast to the hall church consists of a high nave and smaller aisles (basilica type). At this time, the eastern chapel was built on the north side. A little later, two more additions were added. The Western Royal Chapel, founded by Agnes, Queen of Sweden and Duchess of Mecklenburg, was built in 1423. Between the two buildings, around 1466, the third chapel was added.

In the Romanesque western part, the large round window, which is unique for Mecklenburg, with its age-old rosette made of cast bronze stands out. The tower, an octagonal pyramidal helmet, dates back to 1292. Most of the equipment dates back to the 15th and 17th centuries. The 1450 bronze baptismal font is probably the most valuable piece of equipment.

In the royal chapel there are the tombstone for the Swedish Queen Agnes (1434), statues depicting Mary with the Infant Jesus, St. Jacob and St. Dionysius, remains of a Gothic altar and a panel painting with the pictures of Albrecht, King of Sweden and his son. The eight-armed brass chandelier was made in 1582, the three blakers (brass) in the 16./l7. The chandelier was designed by the local blacksmith A. Wendland in the 1970s.
