Ludwigslust Palace

Highlight • Castle

The baroque palace was built from 1772 to 1776 after the model of Versailles, after Ludwigslust had been designated as the seat of government of the Mecklenburg dukes in 1756. The 150 hectare castle park is one of the most beautiful facilities in Germany.

Schlossbrücke Ludwigslust

Highlight • Bridge

Ludwigslust's Schlossstraße (Castle Street) is the town's main street for good reason, and compared to many other main streets in Germany, it's certainly a real eye-catcher.

The 35-meter-wide street begins at the castle bridge and offers separate zones for all types of road users – from drivers and cyclists to pedestrians and horseback riders – ensuring they don't endanger each other.

But what's even more impressive is that the street itself forms an axis of symmetry, with each side appearing to perfectly mirror the other. Every house corresponds to its counterpart in shape, height, and even width. The open space next to each house is also not randomly chosen, but always exactly the same size as the open space on the other side of the street. With so much symmetry, it's no wonder that neighbors often coordinate the plants on their street-facing balconies.

Ludwigslust is known for its characteristic linden trees, and these are, of course, also a prominent feature of Schlossstraße. This tree-lined avenue gives Schlossstrasse the finishing touch, transforming it into a truly magnificent street.

Ludwigslust Town Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Evangelical Lutheran town church in Ludwigslust was originally the court church of the Ludwigslust palace complex in the small town of the same name in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is located around 500 meters south of the castle and is connected to it by a series of courtyards. Both buildings together form the largest baroque ensemble in Mecklenburg.
Due to its orientation towards the castle, the church is not facing the east and is connected to the castle as the starting or end point of an axis over a kilometer long. The fact that the palace and church and thus the central ballroom of the residence, as well as the ducal box and the altar lie in a huge line, the ensemble illustrates the position of the prince in the sense of divine grace.
The actual church is a brick-built, externally simply plastered hall building with a mansard roof, which is preceded by an extra-wide, backdrop-like portico, which serves as a point de vue when viewed from the castle with its Tuscan portico.

The interior of the church is divided by 16 wooden columns - without a load-bearing function - and spanned by a coffered, wooden barrel vault. The highlight of the church hall is a monumental painting on the south wall depicting the Annunciation of the Shepherds.

A special feature of the Ludwigsluster Church is the almost continuous use of painted paper mache - the so-called Ludwigsluster Carton - as a material for the decors, ceiling rosettes, candlesticks and other items of equipment. The altarpiece of the church comes partly from the village church in Klenow, the village from which Ludwigslust developed in the 18th century.

The church does not have its own bell tower, the bell stalls are housed a few hundred meters to the east in the towers of the cemetery portal.

Bethlehem Collegiate Church Ludwigslust

Highlight • Religious Site

After H. Wilhelmini was appointed the first pastor of the Bethlehem Foundation in 1860, the foundation and its staff formed their own parish.

The construction of the foundation church, begun in 1860 by the Schwerin architect Hermann Willebrand and built of brick and bog iron ore, was consecrated on May 1, 1864. The altarpiece was originally by Gaston Lenthe.

The church was remodeled in 1938; this included two depictions of Bethlehem painted by Rudolf Schäfer. As an institutional church parish, the foundation church is authorized to use its own seal and is governed by the Foundation Church Advisory Board, which includes representatives from the parish, the hospital, the foundation, and the North German Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Services are held in the church every first and third Sunday. During the week, it serves as a place of worship for the staff and visitors of the Church Education Center. The services are broadcast to screens at the patients' bedsides via a television transmission system.

In 1960, the bell from 1914 was installed in a separate bell tower.
