St. Johannes Church Ostenholz

Highlight • Religious Site

The church in Ostenholz is a parish church for the villages of Ostenholz, Essel-Ostenholzer Moor, Meißendorf-Kehrwieder and Westenholz. The church has been one of the so-called "reliably open churches" for some time. It is open from early summer to late autumn from morning to evening. Open to all members of the congregation and open to all guests from near and far. It invites you to look, to rest, to reflect, to pray.
Ostenholz has been an independent parish since the beginning of the 18th century. It is connected to the parish of Düshorn under a shared parish office.
The church was built in 1724 as a half-timbered building. It is "east-oriented": the choir and chancel are oriented towards the rising light and are often beautifully flooded with sunlight during church services.
The Hoher Stein stands on the edge of the church. The memorial stone commemorates the villages that had to abandon their farms in August 1938 when a military training area was created for the Wehrmacht.
Directly next to the church is the access road to the giant megaliths Sieben Steinhäuser, which can be visited from time to time (the viewing dates are posted at the Cafe Kleiner Onkel Nickel).
