View of the Palace of Westminster

Highlight • Monument

"The Westminster complex - and this includes the Houses of Parliament, St. Margaret's and Westminster Abbey - is the most historic site in the entire British Empire," says the website for the series "Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity", which presents UNESCO World Heritage sites worldwide to the culture-loving viewer (albeit in German) in short, 15-minute segments. The film clip corresponding to this highlight can be found in the ARD media library at the following link:

The building was originally constructed as a power station to supply electricity to the Royal Mail post office, built towards the end of the 19th century. It was subsequently acquired by the Liebig Extract of Meat Company in the 1920s, manufacturers of Oxo beef stock cubes, for conversion into a cold store.[1][2]

The building was largely rebuilt to an Art Deco design by company architect Albert Moore between 1928 and 1929. Much of the original power station was demolished, but the river facing facade was retained and extended. The Liebig Extract of Meat Company wanted to include a tower featuring illuminated signs advertising the name of their product. When permission for the advertisements was refused, the tower was built with four sets of three vertically-aligned windows, each of which "coincidentally" happened to be in the shapes of a circle, a cross and a circle. This was significant because skyline advertising was banned at the time along Southbank.[3]

Despite these windows being the building's architectural focal point, there is no general public access to the tower which is restricted to maintenance tradesmen.

Millennium Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

The Millennium Bridge is a steel suspension foot bridge that links Bankside with the City.

It initially opened in June, 2000, but pedestrians experienced an alarming swaying motion on its opening day, the bridge was subsequently closed for almost two years so that modifications and repairs could be made to keep the bridge stable and stop the swaying motion. It reopened in February 2002.

The bridge provides a clear view of St Paul's south facade, framed by the bridge support.

The Thames Path is a National Trail that runs from the Cotswolds to Woolwich in London. It's 185 miles (298 km) long if you fancy running the whole thing.

Through most of central London you have the option of running the path on either side of the river, allowing you to create some nice loops of the city.

This segment follows the path on the north bank along the Victoria Embankment between Waterloo Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge.

Kensington Palace and Gardens

Highlight • Historical Site

One of the Royal Parks of London, Kensington Gardens was originally the private garden of the palace. Today it's a vast area of green space and links together with St James' Park and Green Park.

The gardens are fenced, unlike some of the other parks, and only open during daylight hours. There are more formal aspects to the gardens than other parks and they were once park of Hyde Park. The Italian Garden is one of the most curated areas, with its fountains and classical statues. The gardens are free to enter.
