Ponders End Lock

Highlight • Bridge

Originally built in 1770, Ponders End lock was mechanised in 1959. It sits on the River Lee Navigation, a section of the River Lea that was turned into a canal. Stretching between Hertford Castle Weir and Bow Creek on the Thames, the navigation is still very much in use today by boats as well as by walkers and cyclists on its towpath. The path can get muddy in winter.

14.9 km

Just a short hop from Central London, this 520-acre (211 ha) wetland is a treat for wildlife enthusiasts and those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. These reservoirs provide drinking water for around 3.5 million people every day. Cyclists are welcome on the designated paths but be aware that pedestrians have priority here.

Old Ford Lock

Highlight • Bridge

The lock takes it namesake from after the natural ford which used to exist in the area crossing the uncanalised River Lea.

Walthamstow Marshes

Highlight • River

There are at least four different routes, and many more route combinations to ride through Walthamstow Marshes. They link up to Hackney Marshes and down to the Thames, Walthamstow Wetlands and the Lea Valley trails up to Tottenham Marshes and beyond.

After heavy rain avoid the upper route, as the underpass under the railway usually floods. The path by the river is lovely and wide but paved with loose gravel. Overall, a beautiful, relaxing route to ride.

Comments

October 5, 2025,From Stratford to the Lee Valley White Water Centre and half way back
The last bike tour in London ended well despite a flat tire on the return trip.
First, we had to ask for a pump that would fit the valve. Then, when it became clear that pumping wouldn't help because the air escapes too quickly, we looked for a repair shop (see last picture) and had to push the bike there …
