Hühnerstein Sculpture at Vitus 16

Highlight • Monument

You can admire many great works of art from the iron artist Baier, e.g. B. Perlsee, Zwirenzl, Bleschenberg, Kohlenmeiler, Teufelsbrücke, etc. I can't say who this chicken and the rooster is from.

Crucifix on Hammerstraße

The Irish-born writer and literary scholar Clive Staples Lewis (1898–1963), author of the fantasy series „The Chronicles of Narnia“ (awarded the Carnegie Medal for Children's Books for the last volume in 1956), found his way to Christianity only after a phase of atheism and materialism. In front of this small, sacred monument here, in the form of a wayside cross/field cross, I quote an important sentence by C. S. Lewis, which he noted down during the time of his turning to Jesus Christ as the savior and redeemer (1931):
+ “Now the story of Christ is simply a true myth: a myth of the same sort as all others, but with the tremendous difference that it really happened.”

The fountain in the middle of the lower market square (1790) with the figure of Saint Joseph comes from the Schönthal monastery. The octagonal fountain was brought to Waldmünchen during the secularization at the beginning of the 19th century. The column and the figure were only installed in the 19th century.

On the square in front of the town hall stands the Nepomuk monument, which was erected by the Frank brothers in 1769 to commemorate the city's extensive sparing by the Pandurs. It is one of the few monuments that has a chronogram; the capital letters in the inscription add up to the year of construction.

Waldmünchen Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

Waldmünchen looks back on more than a thousand years of history. The settlement was founded in the 10th century. The name Waldmünchen can probably be traced back to the forest monks from a nearby monastery, who provided pastoral care to the residents of the young village. Today you can stroll through the lovingly maintained old town and stop off in one of the numerous cafés or restaurants.
