Wismar railway station

Highlight • Rest Area

The historic station building in Wismar dates from around 1847.

Today the station building is a listed building. After the construction of the railway line from Schwerin to Wismar, a station was needed at the end of the line. The chosen location offered a convenient connection to the port of Wismar. The first buildings were built at the end of 1847, such as two sheds for materials and sleepers or the cyanidation building. Later, the locomotive shed, a carriage shed and an equipment shed as well as the coke store and a coke oven were added.

Old Water Tower Wismar

Highlight • Monument

The old water tower is located directly on the idyllic Lindengarten and was originally part of the Wismar weir system. Wismar was expanded into one of the strongest fortresses in Europe in 1632. Nevertheless, the Danes managed to carry out a sensitive blow against the city by disconnecting the drinking water supply lines for the city and thus creating an emergency. In order to eliminate this weak point in the city's defense, it was decided in 1685 to convert the former defensive tower into a water tower.
