The Windischleuba Dam impounds the Pleiße River in the Altenburger Land district.
It was built between 1951 and 1953 to supply water to regional industry and to provide flood protection for the Leipzig metropolitan area. This also explains why, although the dam is located in Thuringia, it is managed by the Free State of Saxony.
