Jewish Cemetery on the Hausberg (Rotenburg an der Fulda)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Jewish cemetery in Rotenburg was probably laid out in the 17th century (first evidence of lease payments by the Jewish community is from 1682); the oldest found tombstones are from 1734. The cemetery originally served the Jewish communities of Bebra, Baumbach, Lispenhausen, Ronshausen, Iba and Braach as well as Breitenbach as a burial place until some of these places established their own cemeteries. According to documentation from 1937, the older part of the cemetery had 190 gravestones, the new part 155 gravestones. The last burials took place in 1937/38.

At the entrance to the cemetery there is a large memorial stone with the text: "Jewish cemetery. Jews have lived in Rotenburg since the 13th century, at times more than ten percent of the city's population. The oldest surviving gravestone dates from 1748. During the National Socialist All Jews were expelled from Rotenburg by tyranny, many were killed in concentration camps.... Jiskor - remember - Sachor. The secret of salvation is remembrance."

A notice board at the entrance contains the following text on the history of the cemetery: "Jewish cemetery in Rotenburg an der Fulda. The cemetery complex was built around 1740. It served as a collective cemetery for the communities in Baumbach, Bebra, Baach, Breitenbach and Heinebach until around 1870 , Iba, Ronshausen and Rotenburg an der Fulda. After 1870, the complex only served as a cemetery for Rotenburg an der Fulda. Hence the size and the division into a new and an old part of the cemetery. Forest vegetation characterizes the cemetery, as well as its surroundings. The original basic structure has essentially been preserved. Several paths run through the cemetery, many tombstones have been moved or overturned. The last burial took place in 1938. The design of the last tombstone corresponds more to Christian models, Jewish symbols and characters are completely missing. The magistrate of the City of Rothenburg a.d. Fulda." Since October 2020, a large display case has provided information on the history of the cemetery.

Die Schreitende by Tanja Röder

Highlight • Monument

Tanja Röder, Pfaffenhofen
»The Walking Woman«

The elegant shape of the figure is evidence of a subtle female style. The abstract depiction of a walking woman omits the material design of the head, which seems to be formed by nature itself. The figure thus becomes one with nature and space. Flowing form and movement characterize this aesthetic work.
