Saint Peter & Saint Paul Church, Burgh Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

This pretty medieval parish church has nave walls dating back to the Saxon era and even features Roman tiles, thought to have been taken at some point from the nearby Roman fort. It's Grade-II listed and features a fine, crenellated round tower. The church is just a short walk away from where the Rivers Waveney and Yare merge into Breydon Water.

The Rivers Yare and Waveney are two of the Broads' great rivers, along with the River Bure. Here, these two great watercourses meet, flowing into Breydon Water. Around 2,000 years ago, this would've been part of the Great Estuary, a vast estuary with extensive mudflats.

In Roman times, boats would've been able to sail down the Yare as far as Caistor St Edmund and large ships would have been able to follow the Waveney all the way to Bungay. The nearby Roman fort at Burgh Castle was built to protect this important waterway.

View of Berney Arms Mill

Highlight • River

Seen across the confluence of the Rivers Yare and Waveney, Berney Arms Mill is an impressive sight. One of the tallest mills in the national park, it's also one of the best surviving. If the sight of it has you plotting a walk on the opposite side of the rivers, you might consider the Wherryman's Way long-distance trail, which visits the mill.

Breydon Water Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

Breydon Water is a marshy expanse along the River Yare. As very few roads cross these slippery silt flats, this area is one of the most isolated in The Broads. As such, birds flourish here and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) manages quite a large part, maintaining it as a nature reserve to encourage both rare and common species.

Haven Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

This historic lifting bridge dates back to 1930 and is still in regular use to allow boats from the North Sea into the harbour. Only the latest iteration, there have been multiple prior bridges crossing at the same point.

If you’re lucky, you might get to see the bridge rise and settle back down, something which does not always work on the first attempt; it's renowned for not going back into place perfectly. A magnificent bridge, it was once the only place to cross and thus heavily congested. Still busy, the load had been lightened somewhat by the opening of Breydon Bridge in the 80s.

Great Yarmouth is a bustling seaside destination on the Norfolk coastline. Famous for its long and pristine beach the ‘Golden Mile’, the town also boasts a further 15 miles (24 km) of sandy beach and plenty of historic sites. There is lots of beautiful countryside to explore in the area, including the wildlife-rich marshes around Breydon Water.
