Bradford Dale

Highlight • Natural

Bradford Dale is an idyllic wooded gorge that’s full of wildlife. The crystalline River Bradford flows from Middleton by Youlgrave to Alport, where it meets the River Lathkill. Along the way, the river’s course is interrupted by a succession of weirs and pools to encourage trout to breed. These pools are filled with watercress, king cups, reeds and rushes to provide a habitat for birds including the elusive kingfisher.

On the stretch of Bradford Dale underneath Youlgrave, there’s a purpose-built swimming area on the river and expansive meadows for people to stretch out on.

Youlgreave village

Highlight • Rest Area

Charming village although very narrow for traffic. Parking wise there is a cat park just on the edge of the village which is well signed. It’s got an honesty box but suggests £3 per day which is reasonable. There are good, clean toilet facilities there too. Start from the YHA in the village and turn left down the hill and it takes you to the Bradford River which has a designated swimming area.

Packhorse Bridge Over River Bradford

Highlight • Historical Site

Packhorse Bridge over River Bradford, now footbridge. Limestone rubble with gritstone copings. Narrow bridge, canted to centre, with single segmental arch of rubble voussoirs and low parapets, topped by semi-circular sectioned copings. Parapet walls splay outwards slightly to each end.

On the River Bradford, next to the village of Youlgrave, there’s a designated wild swimming spot. It’s been carved out to be deep enough for swimming and is very popular with locals and visitors alike. There are meadows beside the river to sunbathe and relax after having a dip. It can get busy here at popular times, of course.
