Avebury Village

Highlight • Settlement

Avebury lies about 10 miles (16 km) south of Swindon and is a massive prehistoric site with open access to Stone Circles. The main Great Circle is surrounded by a deep man-made trench creating a mound which is nearly a mile round.

Avebury Stone Circle

Highlight • Monument

Avebury is an extraordinary place in the North Wiltshire & Wessex Downs AONB. One of many Neolithic sites in the area, this stone circle is large enough to encircle part of the village.

Many of the stones have names and myths attached to them and there were 100 when it was first built between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago. In the vicinity lies West Kennet Long Barrow, Silbury Hill (a prehistoric fort) and numerous other standing stones and long barrows. Stonehenge lies to the south near Amesbury; a more famous but smaller circle in diameter.

You can visit Avebury's stone circle for free and there are plenty of footpaths passing through which will take you to the other nearby remnants of prehistory.

A point of historical interest close to the Manor. The Dovecote is mid 16th century, Sarsen, formerly rendered. Stone tiled roof. Circular plan with stable door on north side and low door to south. Walls slightly battered. Open timber glover with bill finial. Interior has 15 tiers of nest boxes. No ladder. Documentary evidence indicates a building date between 1533 and 1569.

St. James Church, Avebury

Highlight • Religious Site

The Parish Church of St. James, Avebury
The church dates from around 1000 A.D., or possible a few years earlier, and still retains its tall Anglo-Saxon nave, although this was altered by the Normans. The early church was two storeys high, with round-headed windows on the ground floor, two of which survive, and four round windows on the upper level. Three of the latter survive high in the north wall.

Adam and Eve (The Longstones)

Highlight • Monument

These two stones lie just outside Avebury and are called the Longstones although often referred to as Adam and Eve. Possibly the end of an ancient avenue, Adam — the larger of the two— was once flanked by three other stones, long destroyed. There's something quite atmospheric about their lonely positioning and they're well worth going to see.
