Parish Church of St Matthew with cemetery

Gijzelbrechtegem already has a church in 1230 and the patronage right is held by the Augustinian monastery of Our Lady at Walle in Elsegem (Wortegem-Petegem). The church is thoroughly renovated in 1730 (see memorial stone in the portal which recalls the donation of brother Fransiscus Dhondt). In 1782 the priory of Elsegem is abolished (Edict of Joseph II) and the patronage right falls into the hands of the Sint-Veerle chapter (Ghent). Around 1850 the church is in complete disrepair and it is decided to demolish and replace it. The new church, designed by Pierre Nicolas Croquison (Kortrijk), is built in two phases: nave in 1854; tower and choir in 1859. The church is partially destroyed during the First World War and restored. Damaged again during the Second World War and restored in 1945.
