View of Okanagan Lake

Highlight • Viewpoint

This photo is taken just after the Little Tunnel, capturing Okanagan Lake with Naramata is below right with Penticton then Skaha Lake in the distance.

The trail between Penticton and Little Tunnel is well maintained and, in my experience, always in excellent condition.

Behind Naramata it goes continuously uphill to Chute Lake. Depending on the weather of the previous days, the trail is sometimes difficult to drive. Deep sand passages and rough stones alternate and force the loaded long-distance cyclist to push in sections.

Rock Oven (Kettle Valley Rail Trail)

Highlight • Historical Site

Rock Oven Regional Park is a collection of stone and rock ovens built between 1911 and 1915 located on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail (KVR). The park is a collection of hiking trails leading to 10+ rock ovens which were built by the immigrant workers while building the Kettle Valley Railway. The rock ovens served as ovens to bake bread and feed the workers.

The KVR above Naramata is fairly smooth, becoming a bit more loose and sandy when entering the park towards Chute Lake.

The Adra Tunnel is located along the KVR trail just above Naramata and runs about 490 metres long. The Adra Tunnel has been closed over 40 years (as of 2023).

The horseshoe-shaped tunnel was originally excavated in 1914 as part of the development of the Kettle Valley Railway. Rail operations stopped in the 1970s while the rail bed was bought by the provincial government in 1990.

As of this entry, a Naramata group called the Woodwackers, with support of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, has begun restoration of the tunnel and hope reopen the tunnel to the public in the near future.

Adra Tunnel (The Big Tunnel)

Highlight • Structure

Adra Tunnel (aka The Big Tunnel) is a long tunnel on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail. This spiral tunnel, 489 meters (1604 feet) long, was the longest tunnel on the KVR. The entrances are partially blocked with cement walls to prevent access due to rock falls and some flooding. The Kettle Valley Rail-Trail/ Trans Canada Trail bypasses the tunnel via a short trail. Although it's blocked a short way in due to instability, it's still worth checking out. In Aug 2022, with increased interest in bikepacking the KVR, there were rumours of a restoration project.
