Weg der Tiefe Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

The “Path of the Deep”, opened in 2009, connects Bad Vilbel with the Hohe Straße. With an impressive, 23-meter-long steel sculpture, he takes up the older concept of the “mineral water path”. The focus is on the special geology of the place with its many springs. This has to do with the geological formation of the rock layers - that's why a meter of steel always stands for 20 million earth years.

The "Path of Depth"

Highlight • Monument

This new regional park path connects Bad Vilbel with the “Hohen Straße”. The 23 meter long object made of 6 Corten steel plates represents the last 450 million years of earth's history. "Path of the Deep" because it is intended to illustrate the geological conditions of Bad Vilbel. The rock layers of different ages were offset from each other by faults, which is why Bad Vilbel is characterized by a large number of local mineral water springs. The engraving on the last stele is impressive, showing how long humans have been in the world for a relatively short time.

Historical information on the Battle of Berger

April 13, 1759: On this gruesome day, the Battle of Bergen and Vilbel took place on the Berger Wiesen and the Vilbel Forest as part of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The British fought against the French for the strategically important Free Imperial City of Frankfurt.

The French had succeeded in taking the city in January and the British, as allies of Prussia, now tried to conquer the city with an allied army. 22,000 Allied soldiers faced the 30,000 French soldiers.

After bitter fighting, the French emerged victorious. This day went down in history as "Bloody Good Friday": Around 6,000 people lost their lives in this battle, some of them very cruelly.

Vilbel was lucky in its misfortune: its local area was largely spared from the fighting. The thunder of the cannons during the battle was supposedly so loud that it could be heard from the Berger Höhe as far away as Friedberg, Hanau and Gelnhausen, 30 kilometers away as the crow flies!

Hainwinkel Forest Trails

Highlight • Forest

The most beautiful way to go around the forest is on the narrow circular path within the forest - always close to the edge of the forest, which has recently been banned for cyclists.

The path above the forest with great views to the west, not so nice to the east because it is full of overhead cables.

Old Shooting Range Biotope

Highlight • Natural

The old shooting range was laid out during the Nazi era, but was then also used by the US Army. The current condition as a biotope is due to various nature conservation associations that have achieved a change in use.

Alter Schießplatz Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The 6.8 hectare area is the largest clearing in the Vilbel Forest. Since 1937, the cleared area was used as a shooting range, first by the German Wehrmacht and after the war by the US military. In 1994 the area was returned to the city of Bad Vilbel and extensively renovated from 2001 to 2004. The aim was to secure the resulting poor grassland and swamp zones as well as to preserve and expand amphibious waters. After 80 years without fertilization and cultivation, a rich flora and fauna has developed on the wet biotopes and dry areas that exist today. Here you can find, for example, the common centaury, the small centaury, the Carthusian carnation, the sea jug and the waterskin. The insect world is represented, among other things, by the blue-winged grasshopper, bluebird, painted lady and swallowtail. 5 woodpecker species of the 7 species found in Hesse were observed at the shooting range.
