St Paul's Gate (Rhodes)

Located in the north-eastern corner of the Medieval City, this Gate used to connect the harbour of Mandraki to the De Naillac Pier. A semi-cylindrical tower in the inner part of wall bears a marble sculpture of the coat of arms of the House of Grand Master d’Aubusson (1476-1503) right next to those of the Order and Pope Sixtus IV. Right below such coats of arms there appears the effigy of Paul the Apostle and the inscription, in gothic characters, of “Sanctus Paul”. Judging from the placement of such blazons, construction works on the Gate and this part of the fortifications as a whole must have been brought to completion sometime around 1477, as part of a wider project towards reinstatement of the northern walls commissioned by Grand Master d’Aubusson.

The bastion protecting Gate of Paul the Apostle is an eloquent token of masterful construction technique and a point of reference for fortification works specialists: twelve cannon holes meant to cover a wide range between the two harbours and the mole of Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicolas). A common feature amongst this Gate, the Agios Athanasios (St. Athanasius) Gate and the d’Amboise Gate was the drawbridge module, estimated to have operated through a system of beams and counter-weights, the presence of which is suggested by the vertical slots into the external wall, where the beams of the drawbridge module must have been affixed.

Church of the Virgin of the Burgh Ruins

The ruins of this Gothic Roman Catholic church are inside the medieval town, near the Gate of the Virgin. The church dates from the 14th century and was most likely one of the first buildings erected by the knights. During the Turkish occupation of Rhodes, the Ottomans converted the church into a mosque. Not much remains today due to the bombings of World War II. Only the three apses and parts of the small chapel have survived. However, it is an important monument as there are few other Roman Catholic churches from this period left on the islands. Fun Fact: The name "Burgh" comes from the commoners (as opposed to the knights) who inhabited this part of town

Tower St. Peter is located on the western side of the Gate of Freedom was one of the defenses that protected the north- eastern side of the city.

The Knights, after conquering Rhodes in 1308, restored the walls with a few minor changes during the magisterium of the Grand Masters Heredia (1377-1396) and Naillac (1396-1421) the walls were almost entirely rebuilt and new amended and reinforced in the second half of the fifteenth century.

The tower dedicated to St. Peter belongs to this time: it was built by Grand Master Zacosta from 1461 to 1464 during the pontificate of Pope Pius II, whose crest can be seen on the tower. In addition to the construction of new fortifications, Grand Masters placed on the walls of bas-reliefs of the angels in the city.
