Ilmenau River

Highlight • River

Very nice cycle path along the Ilmenau. The river has largely natural banks here and leaves a picturesque impression.

The Stintmarkt is located in the historic water district of Lüneburg. As the name suggests, the fish species "smelt" used to be traded here, a small, herring-like fish that was very popular in the Middle Ages.

Similar to salmon, smelts swim into the rivers in late February to spawn in the sandy bottom. They were caught and traded at the smelt market.

Today, Lüneburg's most famous bar and restaurant mile is located on the Stintmarkt. The medieval houses, all of which are very well preserved, offer a fantastic and much-used photo backdrop.

Lüneburg Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

The pretty, old salt town of Lüneburg is always worth a visit. There are many highlights and many beautiful old houses to see there, especially in the old town, as well as on the Sande or in the Lüneburg water district from the Ilmenau (Stintmarkt, Alter Kran and much more).

The old crane dates back to the 14th century, it was used to lift goods and also the Lüneburg salt works. In its prime, the crane even managed to lift a steam locomotive. Today the crane is a landmark of Lüneburg and adorns the water district. You can stop here and enjoy the view of the harbor.

Ilmenau Riverside Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The approximately 120 km long Ilmenau Cycle Path is a joint project of the districts of Uelzen, Lüneburg and Harburg. The Ilmenau is the most important body of water in the large natural area of the Lüneburg Heath. It flows through all three districts and in many parts is still very close to nature.
Due to the special features of the Ilmenau, it was decided to design the cycle path as a nature adventure cycle path. This means that some sections of the route do not run directly on the course of the river, because for environmental reasons, existing paths should be used where possible and little should be built, newly paved or asphalted.
Nevertheless, you don't have to do without comfort when you're on the move. The signage was based on the current recommendations of the ADFC. So that you can rest on the way, benches have been set up and shelters for bad weather. At the shelters there are overview boards that provide information about the cycle path, but also show where you are and where the next resting place is.

March 14, 2022,Lüneburg: Backsteintour mit Schiffshebewerk
Short trip to the ship lift. This tour corresponds to the brick tour up to Adendorf, from Adendorf there is a detour to the ship lift.

Extensive spring cleaning was organized at the stork's nest in Erbstorf.

In principle, this is the brick tour to the chapel in Adendorf, but extended with the dangling to the ship lift in Scharnebeck.

The ship lift will be extended by a lock in 2-3 years. The very large inland waterway vessels are supposed to go through there later, the troughs are too small. The ship lift is currently referred to …

Today I did a little tour of Lüneburg and ended up in the middle of the shots of the red roses 🌹 🌹 and cycled along the towpath along the Ilmenau back to the motorhome parking space in Adendorf. Overall, a nice tour. 👍

It was a beautiful round trip. Unfortunately, we were surprised by heavy rain and had to cut the tour short because we were soaked.

Arrived in Lüneburg today. The room wasn't ready yet, so I quickly hopped on my bike and went for a quick ride in and around Lüneburg. We arrived in sunshine, of course, but during the ride it started to rain. It wasn't quite as bad. It's definitely more fun with sunshine. Stay cheerful 😃

Today we followed the Ilmenau on the old towpath - no traffic and beautiful nature. Before Lüneburg, the path even goes under the autobahn. Lüneburg is always worth a trip anyway 😎.
