Today's hall church had several previous buildings in the same place. 775-77 there was already a baptistery, which was expanded to a church by 1000. It had an asymmetrically drawn-in, multi-sided closed choir and a church tower in the west. In 1743 a fire destroyed parts of the city, including the church. After the city fire, it was rebuilt in its old location in 1744–49. In 1824 another fire raged in Elze. The church also went up in flames. It was rebuilt according to plans by the master builder Eduard Wellenkamp from 1826-27 in the baroque style of plastered rubble stones and structured with corner stones.
