Once there, the most beautiful part of the hike begins up to the summit through the block field and over narrow paths with many beautiful old trees. 🌳

The stone dumps of the Steinsburg on the Kleiner Gleichberg near Römhild in Thuringia are a sea of volcanic rock formed by the eroding basalt blocks of the former volcano. They line the slopes of the basalt cones and are a typical feature of the crumbling volcanic ruins of the Gleichberg Mountains. The term "Steinsburg" probably derives from these large stone fields surrounding the mountain plateau. In Celtic times, these basalt blocks were used to build dry-stone walls for the oppidum (hilltop settlement) built around the mountain.

Bench with view of Römhild

Highlight • Viewpoint

After completing the climb, you can sit on this bench and gaze directly at Römhild and the Großer Gleichberg, which seems almost dwarfed from here. Regardless, the view is unique. 🤩

Block fields on Kleiner Gleichberg

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Kleine Gleichberg (641 m) forms a "geological twin" with the opposite Großer Gleichberg (679 m). Both mountains are basalt cones of volcanic origin. The name "Steinsburg" (867: Steinberg) probably originated from the large stone fields surrounding the mountain plateau. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe recognized the volcanic origin of these stone fields as early as the 18th century. The basalt of the former volcanic vent disintegrated through erosion into the seas of blocks visible today, a typical feature of crumbling volcanic ruins. These basalt blocks were used in Celtic times to build dry stone walls to protect the oppidum. A total of three rings of walls were built, surrounding the mountain similar to city walls.
