Historic Post and Telegraph Office Frederiksoord

Highlight • Historical Site

When the office of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid became too small in 1901, the PTT decided to build this post office.
The building is a national monument and is still in quite original condition. Over time, however, the chimneys have been removed from the roof, the wooden sun blinds at the windows at the top of the front have disappeared, as have the shutters (only the original shutters are still on the northeast side). The roof (later converted into a conservatory) has disappeared on the southwest side.

Westerbeek House

Highlight • Historical Site

This simple country house was founded around 1770 by Jonkheer Nicolaas van Heloma, as part of the former Westerbeeksloot estate. Since the establishment of the Society of Benevolence, the country house has been in her possession. General Johannes van den Bosch and his family lived there from 1821 to about 1830. It currently functions as an office for the Society of Benevolence.

In the time of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid, the water level was much higher, making the brook navigable. It was used to transport peat by ship.

G.A. van Swieten Forestry School

Highlight • Historical Site

The Bosbouwschool was founded in 1887 thanks to a gift from Major van Swieten. This in memory of his son Gerard Adriaan who passed away at the age of 21. With the establishment, extra interpretation was given to training, one of the pillars of the ideas of General Johannes van den Bosch. The school was closed in 1902 due to a lack of government funding.

Of the 430 there are still 50 left. You cannot miss them in Frederiksoord and the surrounding area: the colony houses. All with almost the same construction, the front half of stone, the rear half of wood. Often beautifully renovated into comfortable modern homes.

Civil Servants' Cottages

Highlight • Historical Site

There had to be a difference: the officials were given houses that were entirely made of stone, in contrast to the settlers' houses, where the back half was made of wood.

Watchman's House

Highlight • Historical Site

Living in the colony was not entirely without obligation. You couldn't leave without permission. The supervisor kept an eye on that.
