Marchamalo Salt Flats

Highlight • Natural Monument

This protected space has a rich history regarding the production of salt ("white gold") that marked an era in the area of Cartagena and the Mar Menor.
At the end of the 19th century, the salt industry was established, which over the years lost momentum due to low productivity and became a mainly tourist area with a real estate boom.
Today it is a beautiful place to visit and tour where you can still appreciate some constructions from the salt era and also spot native birds.

Portman Climb via Cola del Caballo

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Portman is one of the areas most frequented by cyclists in the Mar Menor area. This climb begins when leaving the town in the direction of La Unión, where we immediately find a very sharp and steep right-hand curve (right here is the parking area to go down to the Cola del Caballo cove). The ascent is about 2.5 kms at 5.7% with a peak above 10%.

Portmán Bay Roundabout

Highlight • Structure

According to Parliamentary Question E-2325/2003 to the European Parliament, millions of tons of waste were dumped in Portman Bay between 1959 and 1989. It is estimated that approximately 13 million cubic meters of mud are flooding this bay, causing the 1957 shoreline to shift approximately 300 meters inland.

This waste contains sulfides, arsenic, cadmium, copper, mercury, lead, and zinc, as the experts consulted acknowledge.

One of Europe's greatest environmental disasters, so it's not a "highlight," but it's still a beautiful cycling route...
