Glacis Bridge, Minden

Highlight • Bridge

The bridge was built in 1995 after a long discussion and connects the southern part of the right bank of the Weser and the large parking lot of Kanzlers Weide with the city center of Minden at the level of the Weserglacis. Above all, the change in the view of the Porta Westfalica from Minden, which lies in the North German lowlands, was discussed.

The competition was won by the Stuttgart civil engineer Jörg Schlaich. He constructed a light suspension bridge that is 177 meters long, spans the Weser at 103 meters with a 3.50 meter wide concrete ramp and is suspended from two 22 meter high tubular steel masts. This only slightly impairs the view of the panorama of the Porta Westfalica.

The southern side of the bridge, facing Porta Westfalica, is illuminated blue at night. This illumination is part of a blue band of light that continues from the city across the bridge to the east and includes the Minden ship mill.

In April 2016, the bridge was closed to cyclists because the railings were too low for cycling. An additional rope was installed in November 2016 to raise the railings to the legally required height of 1.30 m, which made the bridge available for use by cyclists.

Minden Waterway Crossing

Highlight • Bridge

They are trough bridges. The water of the Mittelland Canal is in the trough of the bridge and ships can sail unhindered across the Weser. The Weser is connected to the canal with locks. The concrete trough bridge from 1914 was blown up by retreating German troops at the end of World War II. In 1949 the reinforced concrete bridge was put into operation. Since the dimensions of the old bridge became too small for the larger ships, a new steel trough bridge was built between 1993 and 1998 to the north as a supplement to the old trough bridge.

Mittelland Canal

Highlight • River

From the Ems to the Elbe without any gradients: on the Mittelland Canal, cyclists ride in the countryside and car-free across Lower Saxony - past ports, locks and barges.

Cycling across Germany and hardly pedaling up an incline? No problem if you orientate yourself on the Mittelland Canal. At a good 320 kilometers, it is the longest artificial waterway in Germany.

Bückeburg Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

Very worth seeing town hall. Forms a beautiful backdrop along with other historic buildings. There are of course ice cream parlors, cafes and restaurants in the adjacent streets.

The helicopter museum is in the immediate vicinity.

The monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I on the Wittekindsberg at a height of 268 meters is one of the most important national monuments in Germany and the landmark of the city of Porta Westfalica. Located in an outstanding scenic location at the Weser gorge between the Weser and Wiehen mountains
