Place de Verdun

Highlight • Settlement

This seaside resort hidden in a small valley, despite being devoid of anything resembling a harbour, housed a sailor community. Until the 1970s, the fishermen of Yport used so-called kaïks (beach boats designed to be pulled over boulders). The village has a beautiful architectural unity and a charm that is partly the result of the relatively few tourists.

This beautiful wooden construction of the old market halls, which now houses craftsmen, gives the Place du Maréchal-Foch cachet. (Michelin)

Étretat

Highlight • Settlement

People come to Etretat for the sea and the cliffs. The tourists, with cameras around their necks, have made this fishing village a world famous place, but they also spoil the atmosphere on the busiest days. Still, the place keeps its charm; the spectacle of the cliffs at sunset is so grandiose that everyone should see it once in their life.

Château de Bénouville

Highlight • Castle

Château de Bénouville is a neoclassical building in Bénouville, Normandy, near Caen (northern France). It was designed by architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux and built between 1770 and 1780 for the marquis of Livry and his marquise Thérèse Bonne Gillain de Bénouville1. It is one of the best preserved works of Ledoux and a major monument of neoclassical architecture1. It is now a place of exhibition and cultural events.

The château has a rich history, especially during World War II, when it was used as a maternity hospital and a resistance base by its director Léa Vion, who helped transmit information to the Allies4. The singer Gérard Lenorman was born there in 1945.

Bénouville

Highlight • Settlement

The church is dedicated to Notre-Dame: its choir from the end of the 12th century has pointed vaults and its nave probably dates from the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century.
The choir was decorated with frescoes by the religious painter Louis Chifflet around 1895: there are two paintings in arcades, each representing a scene from "the childhood of Christ". In the nave a funerary plaque dated 1768 mentions Antoine Gillain, Marquis de Bénouville. The coat of arms of the Gillain family are inserted in an oval Sable and composed of a chevron Or, a silver crescent to the dexter, a gold star to the sinister and an armed and langued lion gules in point, the whole surmounted by a crown of marquis.
Two wooden statues hold the attention:
Saint Eutrope (XVI-XVIIth century); bishop healer of dropsy1
Our Lady of the Harbor
We also note the existence of a remarkable Eucharistic reserve in polychrome stone. It consists of two superimposed cylindrical floors crowned with a dove.

View of the Cliffs of Vaucottes

Highlight • Natural Monument

Located between Fécamp and Etretat, this valley is accessed by a small motorable road that descends from the calvary on the D131 between Bénouville and La Haie d'Etigue. Another breathtaking view.

May 30, 2023,Etretat Tour 2
Tour 2 to Etretat was mainly used to see the town. On the way there were of course great views again, but the view of the chalk cliffs d'Aval from below is simply gigantic. On Wednesday we go to Honfleur via Le Havre.

Today, we'll cycle 11 km to the town of Etretat, framed to the east and west by picturesque cliffs. This panorama first attracted Monet in 1885, who painted numerous Impressionist pictures of the coast here. The town also attracts many tourists; if you climb the 85-meter-high eastern cliff on easily accessible steps, you'll find yourself with a bumpy path every …

As announced, we cycled to Étretat today. Although I didn't drive directly into town today, I turned around at the top of the monument with a view of the striking chalk cliffs. The wind, not to say the storm, blew at me on the way back at 35-40 km/h. The incline from the beach up to the cliff is difficult …
