Saint-Cast

Highlight • Settlement

Saint-Cast is rightly considered one of the most beautiful coastal towns in northern Brittany: one and a half kilometers of white sandy beach on the Grand Plage (or Plage des Mielles) and everything that makes a seaside resort, in the district of La Garde, winding lanes steeply on the hillside in L'Isle , boat harbor, beach boulevard, shops and restaurants of all kinds.

From the bridge, enjoy the view of the ruins of the castle on the right bank of the Arguenon. In the 15th century, Gilles van Bretagne lived here, a poet and womanizer who lived a merry life, hence the expression "courir le guilledou" (to go on a woman hunt). But his brother, Duke Francis I of Brittany, suspected Gilles of plotting and had him imprisoned. Because he didn't die fast enough, he was then strangled. Before his death, however, Gilles subjected his brother to divine judgment, and the duke also died, tormented by remorse.

Guildo Castle

Highlight • Castle

The ruins of the Château du Guildo rise above the mouth of the Arguenon.
The castle was once the property of Prince Gilles of Brittany, whom his own brother, Duke François I of Brittany, had imprisoned and murdered for quarrels over inheritance and prestige.

At low tide you can bike across the sea floor to the islands. Follow the harder sand along the water's edge and make sure to check the tide table in order to be back on the mainland latest 90 minutes after the lowest tide

La Banche Beach

Highlight • Beach

Due to the extreme tidal difference at this part of the channel, the lovely beaches are only good for bathing a couple of hours around high tide. At low tide the firm sand allows to cross the bay and even walk out to the Ébihan islands.

At the bottom of a basin that makes your calves creak as you leave, but it's worth the look!

A relatively short hike with several steep sections. St. Jacuts was deserted at the beginning of June, and would probably be overcrowded in the summer. But the views are very beautiful, especially from the top.
