Schelenburg Castle is considered the oldest surviving Renaissance building in Northern Germany.

The complex rests on more than 1,000 oak piles driven into the waterlogged subsoil. After a fire in 1490, the undamaged Gothic keep, with its more than 2.5-meter-thick walls, was connected to the new Weser Renaissance-style section of the castle. Visits are not possible.
