Province Lands Visitor Center

Highlight • Rest Area

The Province Lands Visitor Center is open from May through October. Inside of the Visitor Center are exhibits and a short film about the nature and history of the area. Outside of the Visitor Center is an expansive viewing deck that allows for panoramic views of the Province Lands dunes, the Race Point Ranger Station, Race Point Beach, the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, and the Atlantic ocean. There are also rangers to answer any questions you may have and lead various activities in and around the center. There are also restrooms and a gift shop. You can access the Province Lands Bike trail from here and you can walk along the bike trail north to Race Point Beach. This is a pleasant walk and a nice option if you want to stretch your legs and to avoid the possibility of not finding parking at the Race Point Beach lot.

Cape Cod National Seashore

Highlight • Beach

The Cape Cod National Seashore is a beautiful 40-mile long area of protected beaches and wetlands. There are several trails that cut through the nature preserve and, at times, give you great views of the water.

Race Point Beach is a beautiful well-known beach on the northern side of Provincetown; it is Cape Cod's northernmost beach. This long sandy beach stretches beyond the Ranger Station and Old Harbor Life-Saving Station Museum to the east, and down to the Race Point Lighthouse to the west. This lighthouse marks northernmost point of both Provincetown and the entire state of Massachusetts. While Race Point Beach bakes in the sun most days, it is on the Atlantic Ocean and the water can be quite cold and the currents can be very strong. Fortunately if swimming is not on the agenda, Race Point beach has some of the most spectacular sand dunes on Cape Cod and its long sandy shore makes for fantastic walking. You can take in the dunes as well as the ocean where you can sometimes see whales (primarily Humpback and Finback Whales), seals, and, of course, plenty of seabirds.

Ocean Views on the Province Lands Bike Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The Province Lands Bike Trail is a paved, multi-use path that winds through several different ecosystems in the outer Cape. From this particular segment of trail you get fantastic views of the famous Race Point Beach dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. On a busy summer day you will encounter many cyclists and hikers, as well as the occasional horse, all out enjoying this unique area.

Salt Marshes

Highlight • Viewpoint

This spot on Province Lands Road gives you a nice view over the Long Point Marshes, on the southern fringe of Provincetown facing Cape Cod Bay.

The Provincetown Breakwater (causeway or dike) is an iconic, unique feature that is a must do if in the area. Best crossed during low tide (check a local tide chart and plan ahead! People have been stranded across the breakwater during peak high tides!) this 1.2 mile long, thin dike takes you from the end of commercial district of P-Town across bay to the furtherest point in Massachusetts: an uncrowded, beautiful beach with several historic lighthouses, and sweeping views of the entire lower Cape. While the Breakwater is generally flat, it is not necessarily an easy walk; the granite boulders have gaps between them, they can be slippery, and they are uneven, so use caution and wear good shoes!
