"Tomboli di Cecina", Biogenetic Nature Reserve

Both north and south of the Cecina river's mouth lies the "Tomboli di Cecina" Biogenetic Nature Reserve; established in 1839 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold II to protect agriculture from the violence and saltiness of the sea winds with a pine forest, it extends for 15 kilometers along the coast with a depth varying from 100 to 600 meters.
The Reserve, which is one of the most beautiful forests in Italy, rich in dense and varied vegetation that differs as you move from the sea towards the hinterland with characteristic plant species, is also a resting and breeding area for numerous animal species and a paradise for hikers or cyclists who can traverse it in any direction on small paths or on a straight and wide dirt road. It is equipped with benches and tables for picnics, but lacks fountains and toilets.
Entry (free) and transit (forbidden to motorized vehicles) are not subject to restrictions.
It can be traversed mainly using the network of paths in the scrubland, partly also cycle paths and - in short stretches - little-trafficked asphalt roads, starting from Via dei Cavalleggeri Nord, in Marina di Bibbona (from South to North) or from Via Nuova dei Cavalleggeri (in the opposite direction). Or you can start from the river mouth in Marina di C., reachable by means of a cycle path from Cecina station.

The White Beaches are an approximately four-kilometer section of the sandy coast of the town of Rosignano Marittimo in Tuscany, between the villages of Rosignano Solvay and the center of the village of Vada. Bathed by the Ligurian Sea, are located on the extreme northern edge of the Maremma coast.

The unusual color of the sand, which is why the beach is compared with the tropical coast, is the result of years of processing and calcium carbonate precipitates of a Solvay group located in Rosignano Solvay, about one kilometer from the coast. The Sodiera, the largest in Europe, was built near the beach in 1912 and began in 1914 with the production of sodium carbonate, hydrogen peroxide, polyethylene and chloride calcium, sodium bicarbonate and hydrochloric acid. The access to the beach is given by a small hill, which until 1983 served as a landfill for production and household waste.

La Mazzanta is an agglomeration of houses (mostly holiday homes, populated especially in the summer period) located between Vada and Marina di Cecina in continuation of the Tomboli di Cecina Nature Reserve, of which it constitutes the northern branch, while the southern one extends up to Marina di Bibbona.
It is characterized by some canals (built by the Grand Dukes of Lorraine to reclaim a marshy area and equipped with locks and bridges) and above all by a beautiful uninterrupted pine forest that separates the low and sandy or gravelly coast from the road that connects Vada to Marina di Cecina : it is a secondary road parallel to the former SS.1 Aurelia, but much less busy and still flanked by a cycle path.
Throughout the area there are accommodation facilities (including campsites and tourist villages), bathing establishments and free beaches.
