Vallone Mine

Highlight • Historical Site

The Vallone mine is a beautiful abandoned open-air mine. The rusty cars give the landscape a post-industrial type atmosphere with a particular charm.

Calamita Mines of Capoliveri

Highlight • Historical Site

The Capoliveri mines are located in the heart of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, on Monte Calamita (Magnet), which takes its name from magnetite, the iron mineral found in these mines; namely Calamita, Ginevro and a small work Sassi Neri. For centuries they were the largest source of income for the Elban population, especially those from Rio Marina, Rio Elba and Capoliveri.

To discover the fascinating and ancient history of iron and to understand the hard-working journey of the miners, it is possible to take a guided excursion to the Minera del Ginevro and to the Museum of the Old Workshop.
Magnetite is a dense mineral, its specific gravity is 8 times higher than that of water, it is also an iron mineral with the highest iron content and therefore also the most intense.

The Elban iron deposits are among the oldest iron deposits to have been exploited in the world. Since early history, the island has held a strategic position, both in terms of controlling shipping traffic and due to its inexhaustible mineral deposits, which were targeted by the major powers of the Mediterranean.

Capoliveri Panoramic Trail

Highlight • Trail

Near Poggio Polveraio and Monte Calamita, this scenic trail passes around old mines and not far from where the famous mountain bike events for professionals are held. Capoliveri, in fact, is one of the best places in Italy to ride off-road.

Great bike area on Monte Calamita. Unfortunately, I had an ugly crash on the enduro track 😥

Instead of studying the weather report - just drove off - stayed dry, 🐷had 😀

Great enduro routes. Lower trails with lots of big stones but still rideable without any problems.

Absolute dream round on Monte Calamita.
Starting point is Capoliveri. The tour partly leads on trails from the Capoliveri Legend Cup race. The absolute highlight is the abandoned ore mine near Capo le Francesche. A surreal, magical place. You definitely have to drive it once.

Showing Translation

The first 6 km on asphalt are missing because coming from the black path (world cup), having in common the beginning of one with the end of the other but in the opposite direction, I joined them

Showing Translation

Today we did another obligatory Calamita tour on a fantastically beautiful day!
A must-do for every Elba vacation! 😄👌
