Protected Cat Colony

Highlight • Structure

Avola, Sicily, there are protected cat colonies that are under the protection of Italian Animal Welfare Law 281/1991. These laws prohibit the killing of strays and promote sterilization for population control. Local animal welfare activists and volunteers often take care of these colonies, with official recognition by the municipality being necessary for sterilizations. Source Felina Sicily

Avola Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The building, in neoclassical style, designed by the architect and engineer Salvatore Rizza, built at the end of the 19th century and completed in 1870 on an area originally owned by the Dominican PPs, juts out onto Corso Garibaldi, formerly known as  Strada del Corso . The Palazzo di Città, seat of the Municipality of Avola, consists of two levels. The ground floor is characterized by a central portal with a round arch, framed by pilasters with Tuscan capitals and among these are the effigies of Garibaldi and Mazzini. On the sides of the portal, the wall is covered with ashlars or ashlars in limestone, squared, which stand out from the surface of the wall with hollow joints at the corners. On the first level we find in the center a glass window crowned by a round arch with a lunette and pilasters with Ionic capitals. The secondary faces are surmounted by triangular pediments.

Santa Venera Church, Avola

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of Santa Venera was built starting from the years between 1713 and 1715, on a project attributable to the architect and engineer Michelangelo Alessi from Syracuse. However, the original project will undergo some changes over the years. The earthquake of 11 January 1848 caused the collapse of the sacred building whose costly and tiring renovation was completed in December 1852; the dome, on the other hand, set on an octagonal drum with eight ribs concluded by the lantern, was rebuilt in 1962 on a project by the engineer Pietro Lojacono. The church that has come down to us is therefore a reconstruction building, designed and built in the first twenty years of the 18th century and remodeled with various interventions in the following two centuries.
