Historic center of Piasco

Highlight • Historical Site

Piasco, located on the left of the Varaita stream, has ancient origins. It was a Roman customs station and then passed from the Lords of Venasca to the Marquises of Saluzzo up to the Savoy.
Among the medieval testimonies still visible today, the civic tower, once a bell tower, and the Church of San Giovanni stand out. The Porporati castle, dating back to 1655, dominates the historic center.

Chapel of Sant'Antonio, Piasco

Highlight • Religious Site

Chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony, in Piasco.
Dependent on the nearby (and modern) church of Saint Anthony, the chapel dates back to the 16th century but has been remodeled several times over time. The row of kidney-shaped windows surrounding it is interesting.
Easily reached on the old road from Piasco to Venasca, now used only by sparse local traffic.

Bridge over the Varaita stream (or "la Varaita" as it is locally called) on the road between Piasco and Rossana. You can enjoy an excellent view of the Varaita valley upstream, with the ridge that from Brossasco climbs up to Monviso, and downstream the view of the Varaita that is lost in the woods of the lower valley is very suggestive.

Church of Madonna delle Grazie

Highlight • Religious Site

Beautiful church between Baroque and Neoclassical, with a facade and sides in exposed brick (I suspect it was originally fully plastered). It is located in a very panoramic position, truly postcard-worthy. Useful are the two nearby picnic areas - one right opposite the church, with barbecue and fountain, but without shade; and one just downstream, with only two tables with benches, but shaded and cool. A nice spot for a break, a beautiful destination for a trip.

Church of St. Mark (Lemma)

Highlight • Religious Site

Lemma is a small hamlet of Rossana. In the main square it is not difficult to recognize the church dedicated to San Marco, which stands next to the old elementary school.

Lemma Village

Highlight • Settlement

A hamlet of the municipality of Rossana, Lemma is located on the border between the Varaita and Maira valleys and is one of the Italian valleys where Occitan is spoken. Numerous books published in recent decades recall how Lemma was one of the centers most involved in the Resistance.

Lemma (Hamlet of Rossana)

Highlight • Settlement

Wonderful little town, both for the fairytale panorama and for the town itself, which has a strange sense of beauty and harmony. For me it was love at first sight. The road that goes up there is wonderful, and also beautiful is the road that from Lemma climbs towards the Sanctuary of Valmala.

The Gate of Rossana

Highlight • Historical Site

'l Purtun, in Italian "The Gate," in Rossana.
This is the ancient gateway to the artisans' and carters' quarter, dating back to the time of the Gazelli counts. Well restored and with an explanatory sign beside it, it is located on the main road that runs through the village, with a tiny square in front featuring benches and interesting wooden statues. To enjoy it, you have to turn off the main road and enter Rossana, but it's absolutely worth the effort.
