Kamminke

Highlight • Settlement

The place is on a (hidden) steep slope on the Polish side and in the village you have to go down a 12% slope to the harbor! Adventurous!

From above you have a very good view of the Polish side and the allotment garden settlement called Freudenthal, which is right on the border.

Kamminke is absolutely rustic and a little insider tip! You feel like you're in a small Greek fishing village!

A few years ago, a hiking and cycling path to Poland was built from Kamminke (closed to cars). Try!

This figure was created at the end of the 1960s on the initiative of the then mayor Madel and was created by an artist from Ueckermünde, recalls the pensioner Kurt Schwanz. The now 76 year old has lived in Kamminke since 1946. Worked as a baker and in agriculture. "From 1972 to 1984, when I was disabled, I was mayor myself," reveals Kurt. The stone sculpture was not always in its current position. “It used to stand right on the water and had to move away from this point in the course of the further expansion of the port,” says Kamminker. The original stone sculpture is said to have broken off the arm of a fallen branch of a poplar during a storm, whereupon the sculpture disappeared a little later and was replaced by a new one.

Kamminke Harbor

Highlight • Structure

The sunsets are legendary. But the place itself is still a last resort of authentic Usedom.

Golm War Cemetery and Memorial

Highlight • Monument

Here the Second World War and its effects and victims of the island were worked up very well. I recommend everyone to take the path once you are on the island. Especially the information boards and excerpts told by people from Usedom in the small house are very good and bring the topic closer to you in a different way. If you come out of the little house back to the cemetery, you see the whole thing differently. Personally, the memorial made me think. So definitely recommend it!

View of Swinemünde from Golm

Highlight • Viewpoint

With a height of 69 meters, the Golm is the highest point on the island of Usedom in the east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is located in the eastern part of the island in the municipality of Garz near the village of Kamminke close to the German-Polish border. The Golm and around 25 hectares of its immediate surroundings have been under nature protection since 1967. The name is derived from a Slavic word for hill.

From around the middle of the 19th century, the Golm was a popular destination for the residents of the nearby city of Swinoujscie, which today belongs to Poland. As a result, corresponding gastronomic facilities were built in its vicinity, such as a restaurant called "Onkel Thoms Hütte", a lookout tower and memorials for those who died in the wars of that time. In 1852 the Golm was made accessible by a paved road, in 1880 a train stop was built on the railway line from Swinoujscie to Berlin.
