View of Lana and the Adige Valley from Brandis Waalweg

Highlight • Viewpoint

From this point on the Brandis irrigation channel, a sunny path that runs along an ancient watercourse used to irrigate the fields, you have a splendid view towards Lana, the crops and the Adige valley. At least in part, the water of the Brandis irrigation channel has now been piped and flows invisible to the eye.

Significance, Brandis Castle was the ancestral seat of the noble family of the Counts of Brandis, who probably built it around 1200 and still own it today.

The total walking time for this landscape art project is approximately 2.5 hours. The start is in Niederlana and then leads on the Brandis-Waal (7 projects) to Oberlana in the Gaulschlucht. From there the country promenade takes you to the Fehlau biotope near the industrial zone of Lana (Gaulschlucht and country promenade: 26 projects). The way back is on the same route.
33 artists were invited to take part in the “South Tyrolean Sculpture Hiking Trail” project. They zeroed in on a specific location on the path between Lana and the nearest communities and dealt with it.

The Waalweg is also always kept in good condition. This year I was very surprised that one of the bridges is completely new, then there is a new stone guard - they really do everything here.

Brandis Waalweg

Highlight • Trail

"The leisurely Waalweg walk crosses the foothills of the Ortler Alps on its scenic route between Oberlana and Niederlana.

From the first days of spring until late autumn, the Waalwege, as the paths along the old irrigation canals are called, offer wonderful views of the mountains and the Etschtal, but also exciting insights into a diverse cultural landscape. The ancient Waalwege are among the most atmospheric walking paths in South Tyrol. The Brandis Waalweg runs gently through vineyards, apple orchards and chestnut groves along the low mountain range. The path branches off to the left from the Gampenstraße in Oberlana and leads via Lanegg Monastery and the St. Margarethen Church to the waterfall in the Brandis Gorge in Niederlana. It offers wonderful views of the Tschögglberg as well as Lana and the Merano valley basin. An ideal walking path to reach the parish church of Lana with the famous Schnatterpeck altar."

May 24, 2022,Brandisgaul - Wasserfall – Brandiswaalweg am Fels Runde von Lana
I managed to get there before the storm again. I didn't waste too much time this morning and set off through Lana towards Brandis. Lana is an interesting mixture of the Middle Ages and beautiful minimalist Italian modernism.

To get to the Waalweg, you first have to take a short but steep climb.

Luckily nothing came of the reported rainy day, at least not during the day. So everyone could make their way here. If it should still rain, I decided for Lana. The path could have been broken off due to various topics.
It was planned differently, however, the bus or buses that were supposed to take me to the actual starting …
