Old Penal Detachment of Bustarviejo

Highlight • Historical Site

This former Francoist penal detachment was in operation between 1944 and 1952. With a capacity of 250 prisoners, it served as a prison for political and common prisoners, many of them sentenced to forced labor that they served in the construction of the direct Madrid-Burgos railway.

This sentry box of the old Bustarviejo penal detachment served as surveillance for the prisoners and for possible incursions from the outside, especially those of the maquis, since the environment housed different groups of them.

At the Bustarviejo bar we can taste one of the best craft beers in Madrid, Bailandera. Also good homemade portions

The Church of the Immaculate Conception is, without a doubt, from a historical and artistic point of view, the most outstanding building in Bustarviejo's cultural heritage.

The comprehensive restoration work carried out on the church in Bustarviejo between 2006 and 2009, financed by the Community of Madrid, reveals the great antiquity of this cultural landmark. Architecturally, the interior has a Latin cross floor plan and three naves separated by semicircular arches, with a large triumphal arch separating the transept from the central nave. This arch rests on the church's only column and a large rectangular pillar. The rear façade features a large apse that projects from the rest of the building.

The tower, dating from the late 15th or early 16th century and considered the oldest element of the building, has a square floor plan. It is constructed of irregular masonry with ashlar at the corners and rests on a masonry base. The atrium features a series of seven smooth-shafted columns joined by a wooden architrave built in the early 17th century (1600-1617).

The archaeological excavation revealed a medieval rock-cut necropolis with rectangular and ovoid pits carved into the rock and covered with granite slabs, as well as an anthropomorphic sarcophagus. In addition, the remains of medieval mural paintings were discovered, of great interest due to their subject matter and age (14th century).

Berlanga's film "Welcome, Mister Marshal" was shot in this town in 1953. There are two churches in the film, one of which is fake, but the other is the town's own gothic church, which is well worth a visit.

View of the Pedrezuela Reservoir

Highlight • Viewpoint

Good views of the reservoir, also known as El Vellón, with Guadalix de la Sierra in the background. The mountains that can be seen in the background are the ends of La Pedriza and the area of the Morcuera pass.
