Eltz Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castle Eltz towers like a fairytale castle on a 129 meter high hill in the valley of Elz, a small tributary of the Moselle, which flows around the castle from three sides. The castle had been "lucky" in the course of its history: it could never be conquered by force and was already tended by the owner in the 19th century, cared for and restored for a lot of money, so that today it still stands really well. By the way, for more than 800 years she has been in the possession of the family von and to Eltz-Kempenich, who is committed to ensuring that the castle is maintained and made accessible to the public in the future. In the summer months you can visit the castle. However, you can not drive up to the castle - the steep, small way there you prefer to attack on foot.

Stone Bridge over the Elzbach

Highlight • Bridge

The Elz is a creek about 60 kilometers long on which the fantastic castle is located. You can hike the Elzbach from its source to its confluence with the Moselle.

The whole Elz is a single highlight. Small water whirlpools, floodplains, smaller waterfalls. Just beautiful!

Unfortunately, only scrub remains of the boxwood on the Boxwood Trail, but in some places there are also fresh shoots again.
The hike partly leads over narrow rock paths, sure-footedness is required here.

The route went past a well-known landmark: Eltz Castle. I set off from the Moseldorm in Karden. A sign indicated that the boxwood path that was now starting required surefootedness. For about four kilometers, it ran along a steep path with beautiful views.

Today I continue on the Moselsteig. I take the train to Moselkern and walk back to Treis-Karden.
I walk along the Eisbach that runs to the Mosel for quite some time. The sun is already shining mercifully, it is getting warmer than I thought. Hopefully I will soon dive into the woods.
After about 5 km I arrive at Eltz …

You'll feel warm right at the start of the tour😅 A very varied route with narrow and sloping slate paths on the slope that are physically challenging. The descents are great for training your thighs👍 A visit to Eltz Castle wasn't possible, but we'll do that later😃

Please don't underestimate the boxwood path! Steep, a narrow path, very rocky in places. The rope safety is on the Münder side.
But the view from the Kompuskopf is simply magnificent!

This tour was tough with up and down mountains, but it was really worth it! This area is wonderful, the views make up for everything, the via ferrata are strenuous but doable. The Moselstieg Initially through the vineyards turned into the boxwood hiking trail with the associated via ferrata. Interesting, because the path is really lined with box trees in …
